Thomas F. Freeman Honors College
The Thomas F. Freeman Honors College is named in honor of Dr. Thomas Franklin Freeman, the distinguished professor of philosophy and legendary coach of the acclaimed TSU debate team, who instructed such iconic figures as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rep. Barbara Jordan. Established in 2009 by the TSU Board of Regents, the College stands as a tribute to Dr. Freeman’s lifelong commitment to academic excellence and serves as a lasting source of inspiration for generations of future leaders.
The Honors College is an undergraduate-serving academic unit that invites the most intellectually gifted students on campus to form a living and learning community that holds interdisciplinarity as its cornerstone — a space for exceptional intelligence, deep thought, high idealism, insightful conversations, and unbridled creativity. Its mission is to provide challenging courses and academic enhancement experiences while promoting critical thinking, intellectual engagement, and strong research opportunities to prepare scholars to excel in graduate or professional schools and a career path.
